Changing the CMS: From Graffiti to Orchard

I am moving off of Graffiti CMS and I am glad to be doing it.

I was a fan of the Graffiti CMS platform back in 2006-2007 timeframe when all the rage was Wordpress with its quick installs and easy interface. The barrier to entry to blogging was lowering at a fast rate, and I was glad to see a .NET based solution come out that could be of some help to the platform battle.

Alas, Graffiti CMS was doomed to fail.

I won’t go into the trenches like many people have when talking about Graffiti, I will just take the higher route and say that it is time to move on to something that is suited more for me. The platform that I need will need to be open to tinkering, I will need to be able to make strides in my development quickly, and it will need to utilize some of the new bits and methodologies (MVC, IoC, ORM, etc).

What did I settle on? Well I sat on the Umbraco and Orchard CMS fence for quite some time. Finally I manned up and just chose Orchard CMS for these reasons: 1) it is supported by Microsoft, 2) adding modules to it feels like adding to a familiar codebase without special configurations, and 3) the videos I have watched at CodeGarden11 compared to videos on CH9 about Orchard are vastly different. Don’t get me wrong, the people that write the software behind Umbraco are intelligent people, they just presented at CodeGarden like they could give a damn.

So here I am, starting my efforts, moving off of the Graffiti platform and taking my blog, my data, and my plugins with me. Let’s hope for the best here huh?
