Bah, in the Technology Loop

The current trend (and should be continual trend) is to focus more on creating and less on consuming. When we read on twitter, or tweet everything that interests us, we get a quick response and a crack-like high, but that doesn't get something out there of substance. A quick wit will give you some recognition on twitter, but what about longevity and iconicness?

I recently read @shanselman put his ideas on this subject forward.

I would encourage you all to blog more. Tweet less. Blogs are owned by you. They are easily found, easily linked to, and great conversations happen with great blog posts. The river of social media rushes on and those conversations are long forgotten. A great blog post is forever. Today's real-time social media is quickly forgotten.

The idea that he is trying to convey is one that is found throughout America right now, and it can be described as the "technology loop." A person can consume feeds in Google Reader, then read his twitter stream, jump to tumblr blogs, and back to facebook for some follow-up friend action, but c'mon, where is the creation? Where is the original work?

Original work moves the world forward, dammit.

This quote from @jzy  somes up everything I have been thinking about lately with regard to this idea:

When you don't create things, you become defined by your tastes rather than ability. Your tastes only narrow & exclude people.
So create.
